I would guess that he saw that he was not going to be the obvious starter. When a coach goes out and signs a 6'4" 240 lb jc QB and he has been on campus for a semester, you do not have to be a major in human resource management to see the handwriting on the wall. I doubt that mother and home had much to do with it.

This news is some weeks old. Michael Machen happened.

I wish Smith had stayed. He is a talented kid, and we could have used him as receiver or RB in addition to back up QB.

But I understand his move. He wants to be a starting QB, and got the picture that wasn't going to happen at Kent State. Plus, Hampton is much closer to home. He's got once chance at his dream. I'll miss him, but understand why he is moving on.

Wish him the best at Hampton.

hmmm, interesting....isn't Machen already at Kent? He must be the man if Smith saw his talents in person and fled the scene.

I think Machen is going to light it up this fall.

I just hope that Machen is all of that and some more , because I had not seen a whole lot of stat on this guy. And JC is not D-1.

I feel bad the kid felt to move on..is Coach Martin looking for another David Garrard Masssive QB...I am happy they Kent got Jarvis from Pittsburgh but I have to admit it looks like on paper Akron's new coach blew Martin away in recruiting...I still think kent has above standard facilities and nicer Campus..JD is a salesman

Brookhart was also MAC Coach of the Year. I'm sure that helps. 03-wink
