I stand corrected GFlash68, in Crum’s first year as head coach at Kent the talent was good but the coaching was bad. In my view, Dick Crum, Pete Cordelli, and Jim Corrigall were all horrible coaches. Crum took over for Glen Mason in 1988 after Mason spent two years at Kent and had two second-place finishes in the MAC. Crum followed that with a 5-6 finish, 3-5 in the MAC despite inheriting a team that was picked to win the MAC. I agree that the talent was there the year after Mason coached, especially Erik Wilkerson at running back. But after Crum’s first year, I thought the talent was very weak and it remained weak for many years. The coaching became even worse under Cordelli and Corrigall. I saw Kent play the University of Kentucky during Crum’s first year and there is no doubt in my mind that with a competent coach, Kent would have won the MAC that year. I also saw several games when Cordelli and Corrigall coached at Kent and they were both clueless. On defense, the players were often out of position and they were absolutely an embarrassment to watch.

As far as Martin is concerned, I still contend that he is probably the best head coach that Kent can get. I am not sure if I can agree with you about his lack of discipline.

Suffice it to say, if it were not for those penalties and the injury to Sessler, Kent would have won the game. Neither one can be blamed on Coach Martin. Nevertheless, it still goes down as another loss on his record.

After reading the Record Courier account of the taunting penalities, I too would like to apologize for being so rough on the players involved. Even the writer apologized for his previous article after reviewing the game film. That was my account of the penalities so I thought of them as being stupid, undisciplined play. I do not want machines for players. They need to play with emotion and I can believe that the officials were off base.

I am not ready to apologize for being critical of a system that makes it impossible to have more possession time than almost any opponent. In the dampness of this weekend, I am afraid that our throwing a wet ball 70 percent of the time, will not look good against the NIU running game. Just a hunch. But, I will still root hard for our Flashes.
