If anyone is wondering whether Martin wants to win or will get in a players face take a look at his discussion with Jerry Flowers after the score. I don't think we will see that penalty again
Go Flashes

BlueFlash, since you were able to watch today’s game on CSTV, tell me your thoughts on the game. Although the Flashes lost another close game 34-31, I thought there were some positives in the loss. Certainly scoring 31 points on the road against Navy has to be a positive. The biggest negative has to be the defense giving up too many points.

Your thoughts please. Anyone else who was able to watch, please give me your analysis.

Perhaps Martin should check the replay on that and the other "celebration penalty", 2 of the most ridiculous calls I have ever seen. I'm not one for moral victories (unless maybe if they had Michigan St. with this score), but considering all of the injuries and key guys going down, they hung in there and kept coming back. Turnovers were killing them, the last one that led to the last points for Navy killed them and ended up being the difference. Nice to see some runs mixed in, great call on the fake punt. Is it just me or does Machen look like Bernie Kosar back there in the shotgun with a staggered stance and flinging the ball with an odd motion? LOL!

I am with Polish Hammer. I watched the whole game and was not terribly disappointed. I am past getting agitated over the result of individual games. I admit to way overestimating this team at the beginning of the season, but the early injury to Tillman and the injury to Drager may have never allowed us the opportunity to see this team at its top level. The Sessler injury is heartbreaking because of the emotion he plays with. Watching him the last four years he was always intense no matter the score or record. His fighting the trainer said it all. It was like the desparation of his situation hit its peak. Even the CSTV (Navy) announcers mentioned the controversial cut blocking. KSU does it a lot too, but it is so dangerous for both players (as the Nate Manning injury illustrated) That debate is for another day.

This Navy offense would give probably every MAC D problems. Both quarterbacks are very quick. The line gives the fullback huge holes. And when defending the option, if you can't stop the first or second, you have no prayer against the third option. Some good tackles by Drakeford, Young and Jacques however on the perimeter. That is probably the strength of our secondary.

I didn't know Navy could throw that well. With the exception of the wounded duck INT, every pass play by Navy was executed.

Parrish and Muir have also been battling lower body injuries. When those guys are out, the whole front 7 was extremely young.

Machen's motion makes even his best passes look ugly. I thought they left the running game quick in the first half. I thought Brown may play a series or two. That long TD to Pruden could have kept Brown out. Who knows?

If KSU can continue to make baby steps with the running game, the offense might still come around. I was down on Tillman earlier this year. But he did look quick and powerful today. Flowers looks like he just needs more carries. The second half is how Martin wanted it all year. 3 of the 4 drives were long, sustained and ended in touchdowns.

My pet peeves for the week. Does any other team line up their offensive line that wide? Those splits seemed especially big and unproductive today. For a team which does so many quick throws, it is unacceptable, the KSU receivers do not block better. I can think of 2 maybe 3 receiver blocking penalties that killed drives. The Pruden-Bush combo do it well. Everyone else I am not so sure. Bobb had a couple of the penalties.

Considering the expectations (or hope or optimism) many of us had the last two years, nobody wants to hear another wait until next year or two years. But this team got really young really quick this year. If KSU can beat WMU, Buff. and (can I dream) even steal Akron, this program did not take that next step, but I don't think it stepped back either. The NIU game should be interesting as nobody has blown out KSU since MSU even though each of these four teams could have. This team is decent in just about every aspect, but they have no player or unit to make that standout performance to swing the game.

Martin's emotion was mentioned earlier. This whole team was playing hard. You can see that watching the game. I caught Bush in the background after the fumble on the kickoff in the 4th quarter. I think he was saying the same expletives most fans were.

I thought CSTV did an outstanding job, the announcers were good (they did their homework) and the camera work was as good as the major networks.

Martin seems to be the only one in the stadium who doesn't think that Machen is anything more than a high school QB. He is an embarrasment. He still can't make decisions. Many of his throws are bad. The biggest problem is that he doesn't have confidence and that means the other 10 don't either.

Defense finally stopped the run but, are still nowhere near the receivers. After Sessler went out they couldn't stop the run. Sessler's loss will be dramatic for the rest of the year. He must have had 10 tackles before he went out in the 2nd quarter.

Navy is little and the O-line had trouble moving them out of the way at times.

The penalties against us were ridiculous and without the injuries we would have won. Holding the ball out as you score a touchdown should not be a personal foul. They were not taunting, they were celebrating. That kind of celebrating is not out of bounds. The one chop block penalty was totally legal.

We hurt ourselves as usual but, were also hurt by poor officiating.

The officials were a MAC crew so you can draw your own conclusions but I don't think you can hang the loss on them. I am more inclined to think that the injuries played a major role and if Sessler could have played the second half things may have turned out differently. The injuries were terrible and I am afraid may have finished us for the year, at a minimum the young players are going to get a lot of playing time now.

Overall I thought there was no quit in the team and I was proud of their performance. The running game had it's moments too and for the first time was effective in the spread offensive sets. As far as Machen's performance goes if you think he looks like a high school QB you need to see more high school games.

As someone who was extremely critical of the Flashes after my first look atfter the Miami game, I have to say there was noticeable improvement after the second look yesterday. Don't know when I've felt better after a loss. The team was far more disciplined, stayed focused, and unlike Miami, never quit. That's progress.

ksufball and I must have watched Michael Machen and look a like. After a 25/41 afternoon for 292 yards and a 61% completion rate, I left thinking this was the QB Martin's been talking about. He's even stepped up and done some running...a few sneaks for fiirst downs in third and short situations and a nice 22 yard scamper when his receivers were covered. He's got to imporve in a few areas. First, he takes awhile to get going (usually a quarter or so), and the warm up is ugly. It's this period where he makes most mistakes, including throwing into coverage, resulting in the first INT yesterday. ( The second was a tipped ball on fourth and long- as someone stated, would have been a punt anyway). Second, he needs to look off receivers. He gets locked in and everyone knows who's going to get the toss.

The biggest problem with the defense yesterday was the offense in the first half. As stated in the first post, our time of possession on offense was ridiculous. Actually, for the amount of time on the field, the defense hit hard until the end. No one made any mistakes on coverage. Jack Williams was unbelievable. Besides the INT, he made a beautiful open field tackle to save a TD.

The officials made some bad calls on both sides. The call on the kick off fumble in the fourth quarter was really bad. Williams looked to be down far before the first Navy player arrived. Before we get too excited, it looked like a very close call on Machen's goal line fumble- the one before Flowers brought it in, and an INT they ruled incomplete. Both teams can complain about the calls.

Finally, had a very pleasant conversation with Justin Parrish's father. His parting words - "We've just got to win one of these. We just need a win." Amen, Mr. Parrish. Amen.

I'd feel like it would have been more of a moral victory if the D could have forced one punt. Jacobs is going to run wild next week. Early prediction 63-32. Whatever the over is will be easy money. This program always finds a way to loss, the just have better character and don't quit anymore.

Machen looked great this week, don't understand any criticism for the last game.

Martin has 2006 left in my grace period, his team is a few plays away from being 4-2. This program never gets any luck when it needs it.

It's actually Garrett Wolfe this week. The Jacobs show does not come to Dix, yet.

To expand on what I said about timing. Use last year as an example. If KSU plays Akron and/or Marshall during their winning streak last year, KSU probably wins those games. On the flip side, who knows if they win at UCF or against EMU/Ohio if those games were in October. If KSU does build a winning streak yet, why do they have to wait until late October to do it. 03-lol

Based upon that news article Martin must have listened to me.
