I attended the Womens opener last night against Lipscomb and here are just a few things that i noticed...
1. The starting lineup was Shearer, Griffith, Willoughby, Vavrek and the freshmen Bennett....interesting to start Bennett in the first game of the year but this girl can play some defense. She consistently hassled her mark as did the rest of the team for the first half as we got out to a 15-0 run.
2. We are deep on the bench as the other two freshemn Scull and Hamblin both got plenty of playing time, although Hamblin seemed to make a few mistakes along the way defensively and with passing. Stewart, James, and Lafleur all looked pretty solid coming in. Scull looked great in the paint. She had a number of moves against Lipscombs taller senior center and will definitely be a great player down the line. Great rebounding all around by this team as we seemed to grab everything that was missed by either team.
3. Lipscomb started two freshmen so they obviously lost some people off the team that beat us last year. They couldn't hit a shot to save their lives last night and their free-throw shooting wasn't helping them at all. Our girls came out pretty hot shooting and looked pretty good on shot selection. A few times there was that extra pass inside that might not have been needed when a shot could have been made around the free throw line.
4. As it stands now i can definitely see Bennett staying in the starting line-up as she is quick and plays great defense; she can also shoot the 3ball...Scull would be my number one pick off the bench as she just seems a little quicker and more polished inside than Lafleur or Griffith. Stewart coming off the bench as sixth man is a great way to go. She brings plenty of hustle to the game and can always give that extra spark.
5. All in all i think we played a great game against a team that had a horrible night. It will be interesting to see how we fare against Auburn tomorrow and further down the line into conference play. I think if we stay healthy there should be no reason we dont make it to the Mac Championship game and further.
Come out and support the ladies if possible. Not a bad crowd last night for a friday night game but these girls can play and are a sight to see.

Thanks for the pulg on the ladies, ksujjeff.
I've had the pleasure to meet Lindsey Shearer on a few occasions. Not only a talented athlete, she has quite a presence and maturity for someone of her age. Very impressive.
A final thought...hope Ms. Hamblin stays in touch with her boyfriend in case things don't work out for him at Virginia.

Thanks a lot for the recap, a lot more insightful than any website recap. Keep em' coming. Can't wait to see the ladies again when they come to Upstate vs. St Bonna in a few weeks. Any one in NE Ohio needs to support this program, I was always disapointed with attendence when I was still at Kent.

Jeff,
Somebody else that knows a little bit about KSU women's basketball. I'm guessing Shearer played only 12 minutes because of the rout and the Auburn game? I didn't read anything about injury or illness. KSU seems deep, and Bob Lindsay sounds too positive for November. This team must really have potential to be special.

KSTUD,
Your right about Shearer...she didnt have any illness or injury. I think because it was a blowout so early and the need to get the rest of the bench some quality minutes early in the season to get their confidence up was the reason she didnt play much; as well as the Auburn game today. I will be attending that as well so i will have a write up later this afternoon once i return home. Let's see how we play against some real talent as Auburn has a very quality team and some excellent freshmen starters of their own.
Jeff

KSU beats Auburn 68-64 in OT :chair: Lindsay Shearer had 38 points. I just heard the end on the radio. The Flashes were down as many as nine in the second half, I believe.

Way to go Ladies!
The last time both the Men and the Women won MAC titles was in 2002. Hope this is a sign of things to come.
