I'm not convinced Indiana was the better team. They made a ridiculous amount of three-pointers to win, and you just have to tip your cap to them.

1. Duke was weak at point guard that year. In fact his missed free throws down the stretch were why they lost to Indiana. With our strong guards we had a good match-up and at least I am convinced we would have beat the number 1 team in the nation that year.
2. We had beaten Indiana in the NCAA the previous year so the suprise factor was taken away from us. They knew what they were getting into from first hand experience. Duke would have started slow against us.
3. Indiana immediately became the cinderella with that win. The coach that replaced the hated Bob Knight became the media darling. Because of that we did not benefit from having the neutral part of the crowd rooting for us.
4. Because Indiana won the neutral part of the crowd almost did not exist anyway. Duke would have had fans but not nearly as many.
As I have said many times about that game. Oh well??
I've been saying the same thing for years. The worst thing that could've happened to Kent was Duke blowing that big lead against IU.
I watched Kent play at the University Hoops Classic at Robert Morris during the beginning of that season. The Flashes were playing horrible at that time, and my friends and I couldn't understand why this new player (Gates) was always shooting the ball. Ironically, Pitt played in the Classic, though it never face Kent. During the Flashes game against a crappy Robert Morris team, when they were struggling in the first half, a Pitt fan sitting behind us started running his mouth by saying, "This Huffman guy is overrated" and "Huffman sucks." The fan got an earful once Huffman started draining shots and Kent pushed the lead to 20. Wonder if the guy still thought Huffman sucked after he dropped 17 on Pitt in the Sweet 16 game?

Burden, I attended that tournament and watched every game, not just Kent State's. I was glad they didn't have to face Pitt then. The loss to Hofstra eliminated that possibilty. Of course, the Flashes eventually improved considerably.
