Pleasantly surprised. Had to step away at halftime for a while. Expected to see it a 20-point margin.

RE: UAB game
Not the way I envisioned us starting this stretch of games. Showed a little something in fighting back, but plenty of work to be done here.

RE: UAB game
Pretty much the same problems we've seen all season: Lack of ability to get the tough rebounds & very little contribution from the bench (though Neally had a few moments).
I see 4 guys I like (Greene, Sherman, Guyton & Porrini). Not much there from the rest of the team...About ready to give up on Holt.
Play like this against the Gators and its a 30 pt whuppin.

Porrini needs to pass more and shot less, takes care of the ball but still looks to shoot to much.
UAB is by far the best team we have played. skilled at all positions and tough rebounding team. The sooner Nealy gets ready the better.
GO FLASHES!!!!!!!!!

RE: UAB game
David Crane is our radio pbp guy for football, basketball, and baseball... so you picked up on the fact he's a homer? Steve Mitchell does radio color for basketball... he was an All-American basketball player at UAB, his number is retired and hanging from the rafters, and is also the facility director for the arena.
The video feed is straight from our arena's video boards, so you get poor video from time to time.

RE: UAB game
Plusses:
* Nealy looked pretty good IMO. I like Mott guys, so I think he will really contribute
* Greene looked good in the 2nd half.
* Sherman looked very solid to me.
Minusses:
* Porrini does too much. He has skills, but plays like he needs to carry the weight of the team. I like his hustle and rebounding, but I'd like to see him shoot less (especially from 3) and drive and pass more. The shot that killed me is when he jacked a three immediately off an inbound play at 6:04 when Kent is down by 5. Unless the shot clock was zero (which I don't think it was), the shot was a very poor choice and about the last play I wanted to see.
* Holt didn't play well and worries me.
* The D against Johnson and Cameron wasn't good. Johnson is quick as heck and Cameron is an awesome player, but Kent didn't have good answers.
I like the core of Sherman/Greene/Guyton/Manns, but I want to see calmer, more consistant play out of Porrini. I'm hoping that Holt will improve and Nealy will contribute immediately. I like Gaines, Johnson and Leonard, but I think their play will be unsteady.

RE: UAB game
Well I am back home and while it sounds like you guys got some video, I will recap what I saw.
In the first half, KSU was mostly sleepwalking. Seemed like we went through the motions. The thing that is even more disappointing than anything is that I don't think UAB is very good. We were getting pretty good shots (that weren't falling) and UAB was busy getting layup after layup. I can say, that changed dramatically when Nealy came in the game. In the second half, we showed a lot of fight. At least twice, the lead was 14 and we cut the lead to 1 and then 2 before hitting our dry spell that all but sealed the game for them. While I pretty much never blame the officials (and won't tonight) the free throw advantage for UAB certainly made a difference. Ultimately, our inability to contain Moore killed us.
From a personnel standpoint, Nealy is going to be really good when he gets to 100%. Even though we are young and for the most part inexperienced, we have a lot of guys that can flat out play and when someone is having an off night, there are plenty of others who can pick up the slack. I am going to say it right now, KENT STATE WILL WIN THE MAC. We are going to lose a few along the way, but there is no other MAC team that has the overall quality of talent that we do. Florida is not playing very well, so hopefully we catch them flat on Thursday night and get a big W.

Thanks for the 1st hand insight (especially regarding Nealy). I agree KSU will win the MAC but I want more!

UAB played a more aggressive game than KSU and it shows in the rebound and foul columns. UAB has been outrebounded in nearly every game this season, yet outrebounded KSU by 8 last night. UAB only made 3 more trips to the line than KSU, but UAB shot 90% from there.
I think what hurt KSU more than anything was that they haven't really traveled this season and have played a weak schedule to date. KSU's comeback attempt didn't phase UAB and I'll chalk that up to experience.
UAB needs KSU to have a good season; hopefully this loss will fire up the flashes for their tough upcoming schedule.
Best of luck this season!

I had not seen the stats from the game to know about the FT difference. Forgive me, it was 1am and I had just driven 3.5 hours home. It seemed like UAB shot a million FT because they made every one of them. Kudo's to UAB for making some big shots when KSU had made the game tight. KSU just went dry at the wrong time. Maybe we were tired from grinding back all night, maybe it was great defense, or a little of both, who knows? Last night was a winnable game for the Flashes, the problem was we waited too long to show up. Hopefully, lesson learned. We will see what Thursday will bring for us.
Good luck in CUSA this year (except when you play the Tigers). Help both our RPI's.

RE: UAB game
Schard, I wouldn't say that Kent State's schedule was "weak", exactly. On the other hand, until last night it wasn't especially "strong", either. Cleveland State, Iona, Robert Morris, Furman and Lehigh are all teams that are expected to win or at least compete strongly for their conference championships. Clearly, though, UAB was their strongest opponent to date. This is the least experienced Kent State squad in about 15 years and I believe the schedule was set a much as is possible not to play TOO strong a schedule too early. IF everything goes according to plan, last night's win should be a quality win for you.

RE: UAB game
The disparity came not at the foul line but in fouls called. Kent was whistled 21 times to 12 for UAB. That clearly affected what Geno wanted to do sub and match-up wise. Some fouls were dumb, yes but it also seemed as if the officiating crew knew who KSU's playmakers were and tried to get them in trouble early. Case in point: trying to tag Greene with number two before going to the monitor to correctly charge it to Johnson. But that's why you have to try and play 10 points better on the road because you are never going to get ANY help.
