A Kent State University men’s basketball player has been charged by Brimfield police with stealing a woman’s car Wednesday following a night of drinking, and also is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault on the woman.
Carlton E. Guyton, 20, was arrested by Brimfield police and charged with felony theft after he took the woman’s car Wednesday evening without her permission.
Brimfield Police Chief David Blough said his department also is investigating the woman’s allegations that she was sexually assaulted by Guyton.
Blough said officers were called Wednesday to an apartment on Cascades Boulevard for a report of a stolen vehicle. They later recovered the vehicle and arrested Guyton for the theft, he said.
The alleged victim also told police she was sexually assaulted while passed out from drinking Wednesday night, according to Blough. Guyton told police the sex was consensual, Blough said.
The pair was drinking at the Brimfield Applebee’s, located near the woman’s apartment, and at her apartment, Blough said. Guyton allegedly told the woman he had to go home, but she passed out, so he took her keys and her vehicle and left.
“She apparently didn’t give him permission to take the car,” Blough said. “We’re trying to sort out two different stories.”
Guyton was booked into the Portage County jail at 4:34 a.m. Thursday. Arraigned later that day in Portage County Municipal Court in Kent, Guyton was released on a personal recognizance bond by Judge Kevin Poland.
Guyton has not been in trouble with the law in Portage County, according to court records. A preliminary hearing on the theft charge is scheduled for Thurday in Poland’s courtroom, according to court records, which did not list an attorney for Guyton as of Saturday.
“Men’s basketball junior guard Carlton Guyton was suspended indefinitely for violation of departmental policy as soon as we learned of the alleged incident early Thursday morning,” said Alan Ashby, assistant athletic director for communications. “We are currently awaiting the results of the full police report to make any further determination on his status.”
The next game for the KSU men’s basketball team is Tuesday at home. Unless the case reaches a resolution by Monday or early Tuesday, Guyton would not be eligible for the game.
Guyton is a 6-foot-4, 175-pound junior guard at KSU who played basketball at Rich South High School in Chicago and junior college ball at Mineral Area Junior College in Missouri.
He was signed by KSU in 2009 for this year’s incoming recruiting class.

Very interested to hear the other side of this story. Hard to believe that Guyton could be so stupid to do the things exactly as charged.
With Guyton gone (at least for Tues vs. YSU), KSU is really in a jam at guard. Holt my boy, here's your chance to show what you can do!
