RE: Hang the banner / hang an "L" on Akron!
I don't want a noon game. I can't get to Cleveland until at least 5 p.m., so I will be extremely pissed if we play at noon. Better be a 7 p.m. tipoff!!

Hey Ty! As the #1 seed, don't we get a say in when we tipoff for our opener! Especially being so close to Cleveland, wouldn't attendance benefit from KSU starting in the evening, when more people could attend following work?

Flashesfan21 - I agree with you about being able to play at night. Remember our 2002 team played that nooner opening round game vs. Marshall and were pretty stagnant out of the gate.
I don't THINK the top seed gets to "choose" its game slot but I'm pretty sure an added incentive for the top seed was allowing it to play in the night session for better fan turn-out.
Again, it isn't confirmed but I've been told to plan for a night game. Also just a reminder to score your MAC Tourney tickets from the KSU office, they are $20 cheaper and you'll be guaranteed to sit with the GOOD GUYS!

Yeah, think of it from the perspective of the league and Quicekn Loans Arena. I don't think either of them wants Kent State (or Akron) locked into the noon game from a financial perspective.
I am in a nice position to be able to attend the game at any time of the day but I may be an exception. The league and the "Q" know that Kent State and Akron are their biggest ticket/concession draws. By being able to put (at least) one of them in the 7pm game helps that out a ton. A forty minute drive after work gives (say) 1500 more die hard fans a chance to get there. Plus, the casual local fan is more apt to come see Kent State vs. Central/Buffalo/BG than Ball State or Western vs. one of those teams.
I know Ty can't guarantee it but I think he is right and I think the MAC and Q deserve to have some say. Stuff like that goes a long way towards keeping the tournament in Cleveland. So, if this is the case I will see you at Flannery's at 5:30 or so!

Ty - Thanks for the info. Also, wanted you to know that I think it's great that we have a true "Golden Flash" as our radio guy. I can tell that you're really into it and that you're enjoying this as much as we are. As the old saying goes, "enthusiasm is contagious!"

Are they thinking about putting up another banner saying that they are back to back champs? I think a banner like that would set the 3 peat up very nicely.

I'm definitely all for it. Duke and Carolina are debating on if they should hang a banner after whichever team wins tonight, as a regular season championship is not as important in the ACC. However, its their, in Kent's case our, gym. Hang the banner to your liking.

Anyone else notice the gold t-shirt Ty had on last night? I got a kick out of that when I saw that on ESPN2 last night. Great job Ty and thanks for inviting Dave C. to do the games for the MAC Tourney.

ilovegymnast, I would think the regular season champion would be even more important in the ACC. I mean, you don't have to win the ACC tournament to go to the NCAA tournament. Really, their tournament only serves to help or hurt middle-of-the-pack ACC teams that are "on the bubble". Or is that a holdover from when only one team per conference went to the NCAA tournament, and the ACC was one of the few, if not the only, conference to determine their representative by a tournament?

The tourney is big. The regular season champ, eh, not so much. Still big, but not as big as in the mid-majors. Regardless what happens tonight, both teams are in the NCAA, with a good seed. The importance of the MAC is obvious, winning the reg season guarantees post-season.

Thanks, AlphaFlash. I take your word for it. I just find it odd, though.

If anything, just beating Duke is more important than winning the reg season ACC. Winning the ACC is more of the added bonus. But Carolina hangs a banner for any reason, really. Of course, I don't blame them. They should. And the MACC should have a back2back banner in it as well.

I see what you mean, Alphaflash. Some rivalries are so intense that winning those games often means more than anything else, and is what players and fans remember the longest. It's amazing how intense the Kent State-Akron rivalry has become since Akron joined the MAC. The games before Akron joined the MAC were nothing like this.

I think it would be a nice selling point for future recruits. Something Ford can point to on their visits or when they come up on their own to see a game. Plus its a nice smack in the face to the rest of the MAC.

I've always said that both schools are sitting on a gold mine that they don't utilize enough. There needs to be a week-long celebration on both campuses leading up to basketball and football Kent State/@kron games. Every corner of campus needs to be painted in blue and gold the week before these games. Downtown needs to be buzzing with anticipation before the crowds ascend on the community. Every celeb in NE Ohio should be given free tickets. Not so much to sell-out the games, but to build up spirit and anticipation. This would create a buzz that propels both teams into the MAC-T.

You're right Alpha. At OSU, Duke, and even smaller schools sports is part of their culture. We won't improve attendance until we make going to these games part of the Kent State culture. We have the incentive of success on our side, we just need people to put some effort into drawing fans in.

At a lot of schools, the administration, faculty and staff, almost make sporting events important by letting it be known that they attend. Too many of our staff view athletics as being in competition with their objectives, rather than a vital compliment to the overall university prestige. This is just one factor of many that could be addressed to build interest among students.

The conference will officially set Thursday's schedule after the quarterfinal pairings are set. I expect WMU to be up at noon, then Ohio, then Kent, then Akron.
