dannyb73 Wrote:Dave - That is great news. However, it does seem off that this event was a leave on the weekend, play on the weekend, return on the weekend kind of event, yet it was necessary to leave them behind. In my days (I traveled with KSU from 91-95) that would not have happened. So to me it still seems a little fishy.

I understand why you would think it is fishy.

Trust me, it isn't. Not with regards to the kids. Just dotting i's and crossing t's stuff.

RE: Hoops Questions
I know I've had "academic" activites on the weekends. It could be a weekend workshop or even just as simple as a major project that is due on Monday. Its college, its a 7 day a week job.

RE: Hoops Questions
Seeing that it was a scrimmage they would not be excused from class, only if it was for an actual game. Simpson is a good kid I know cuz I have been around him. This is probably going to be the most talented team Kent State will ever put on the floor, lets just hope they can put everything together before the season starts and play as 1

RE: Hoops Questions
The fact that Kent State apparently didn't perform well in the scrimmage is all the more reason it is a good thing they had it. I wish they had more. I think the NCAA only allows two, at the most.

RE: Hoops Questions
We kind of do have one more...the exhibition against Muskingham
next Monday. Doesn't count against our season record.

RE: Hoops Questions
Right, Mussle-Man. A team is allowed two exhibition games, or two scrimmages, or one of each. Exhibition games are nice for the fans, but a team can learn more by scrimmaging a good D-I team than they can in an exhibition against a non-D-I team. The NCAA prohibits exhibition games against another D-I team, by the way.

RE: Hoops Questions
The Muskingum exhibition should be fun though...
watching Geno go against his dad.
Plus, our first chance to put all the new names with faces.
Looking forward to it.

RE: Hoops Questions
On the other board Stevehare reported that Evans and Simpson are having some clearinghouse issues. Anyone heard about this and care to comment ? I live in Memphis and the Tigers have 2 players that have yet to be cleared and at this point cannot practice (they reached the maximum amount of practice time for a non-cleared player) or play. Dave ?

RE: Hoops Questions
As I understand it, everything is expected to be ok.
Again, its just dotting i's and crossing t's. It happens with junior-college transfers sometimes. Shouldn't be a big deal.

When it comes to eligibility and the NCAA is involved, don't assume anything.

Off the limb? Not sure what you mean.
I've talked to a bunch of sources and it's not a clearinghouse issue as some have suggested. They are junior-college transfers, so there can't be clearinghouse issues. The hope is it will all be figured out by Monday. If it isn't, I'll tell the story then. Even if it is, I'll tell the story after the exhibition game.
I've been told, though, that it looks like everything will work out.
I can absolutely, 100-percent say, though, that the players themselves have not done anything wrong.

If you mean I should get off the limb because I may be mistakenly saying something that's not true, don't worry. I don't think I am. All of the sources I've talked to really do seem to believe this will work out. And if it doesn't, then the athletic department will have to answer for a big mistake.

I'm not worried about it now. But if it isn't all worked out by Monday, then I'll start to worry.

RE: Hoops Questions
When the NCAA is involved, these situations rarely work out the way you think they might. These is strictly an academic situation, not a discipline situation.

You know more than I would because you communicate with people in the department. All I am saying is to reserve any predicitons. Make sure the NCAA or KSU doesn't throw any curve balls with regards to transcripts, accepted hours and eligibility. It is always a dicey situation in these cases.

Believe me, I know.
There may have been some preliminary indication from an official that it looks like it will be ok. That's if I understand what was told me. Doesn't mean they still can't throw a curve, though.

RE: Hoops Questions
Anyone know Chris Singletary's status? His court date has been continued, which is typically a sign of a deal in the works.
His date in court is now in January...wonder if he can play before hten?

RE: Hoops Questions
I am sure they would not have gotten a continuance unless he was going to be able to play. But I say that and it is remarkably quiet as to the "paperwork" that is holding up Evans and Simpson and when we should know something.
