GAME NOTES: The Mid-American Conference regular season title will be decided tonight in Akron, as the Kent State Golden Flashes take on the hometown Zips.
This showdown represents the final regular-season tilt for both teams, and they each own identical 22-8 overall records and 12-3 league marks.
Kent State is on a major role, as the club has won four straight and 12 of the last 13 games. Last Saturday, the Golden Flashes played tremendous defense in a 66-58 victory over Miami-Ohio.
As for Akron, it has won seven of its last eight games, and 13 of the team's victories this season have come at home. The club knocked off Bowling Green last Saturday by a 74-68 final, and its last six wins have come by 10 or fewer points.
The Golden Flashes easily handled the Zips in an 87-70 final in the first meeting this season, and Kent State owns a 67-61 advantage in the all-time series between the rivals.
Justin Greene has been the leading scorer and rebounder for Kent State in three straight outings, and he is averaging 14.1 ppg to go along with 6.8 rpg while shooting 54.8 percent from the field. Chris Singletary is netting 11.8 ppg for the Golden Flashes, and he has handed out 111 assists in addition to 48 steals. Adding further balance to the lineup are Rodriquez Sherman (10.5 ppg) and Tyree Evans (10.4 ppg), and Kent State is generating 70.4 ppg while allowing 64.1 ppg to foes. Greene posted 18 points and 11 rebounds in the victory over Miami-Ohio last time out, and Frank Henry-Ala added 12 points. Singletary and Anthony Simpson both tallied 11 points for the Golden Flashes, who only turned the ball over four times and limited the RedHawks to 37 percent shooting.
It is hard to believe that Akron has enjoyed so much success this season considering that only one player on the roster is averaging double figures in scoring. Furthermore, Brett McKnight's team-high output of 10.5 ppg is far from impressive. Fortunately, this is a quantity over quality situation, as many players have made positive contributions for an Akron club that personifies the value of unselfish, two-way basketball. The Zips are generating 70.2 ppg while allowing 63.8 ppg to foes on just 40.9 percent shooting. Brett McKnight scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field for Akron against Bowling Green last time out, and Jimmy Conyers added 12 points. The Zips earned a 33-24 rebounding advantage in that affair, key to the club's success.
This game will be much closer than the first meeting between the two teams. Still, expect the winner to be the same, as the Golden Flashes will overcome the Zips and their supportive home crowd to claim the MAC title.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Kent State 71, Akron 65
