Field Hockey Champs
Some bright news for a cold Saturday. Debbie Bell scored her 25th and 26th goals of the season, giving KSU its ninth MAC Championship. A great come-from-behind performance from a great Kent State team.

Great news for the girls.

I knew many of the field hockey players when I was in school and learned a lot about the sport. It is great to see them continuing the winning tradition. At some point, the elusive NCAA tourney win will come, too.

Given the hard times the KSU volleyball and soccer programs have had during the fall the last few years, the field hockey program maybe deserves some extra credit.

If they play they way they finished this year then I wouldnt be surprised to see a deep run in the tourny. At one point in time this team was ranked until the Kent State curse caught up to them. I know they beat a number of ranked teams early in the year. I wish I was able to make it to more games then I did. Most people who attend dont appreciate people who cheer loudly so I try to limit myself to how many I go too.

What did they think it was golf or tennis? People need to get involved in the game. Maybe it is the bandsman in me or the hockey fan in me.

RE: Field Hockey Champs
The first field hockey game I went to was against Michigan. I showed up late and Kent was down like 4 goals. So I decided it was time to start getting behind the team. Id say a good 60% of the crowd wasnt even paying attention to the game. My friends and I started to cheer the girls on lightly at first but then Michigan stole the ball with a clear field to the goal. I had to get vocal at that point and the whole crowd shut up and stared at me and the girls on the field even stopped play in confusion. It was the most awkward I have ever felt at a sporting event. Luckily it was a day that was a triple header with the field hockey, soccer, and football team playing one right after the other. We hurried over to the soccer game with all the parents starring at us in disgust.

They climbed back up to number 20 in the nation but as usual they have to go on the road and play the #9 team American in a play-in game. I suppose playing on the road is a disadvantage even when there is a small crowd but maybe they can finally win one this time.
