It’s Over
According to DC in his blog, Doug Martin resigned today.

Coach Martin deserves thanks for putting everything he had into our program. I wish Doug and his family the best in whatever he decides to do next.

Thanks for 7 years of service. Hopefully whoever is next will be able to get us to where we want to go. Better days ahead for KSU football! 02-13-banana

Even though I understand that this had to happen, I also want to extend thanks, and best wishes, to Coach Martin, in all his future endeavors. Things just did not work out in his favor here at KSU.

RE: It’s Over
It is time for a change. We have had talent over the years. Now let's get a coach that can win.

For some reason, I felt that it would happen today. I have been reviewing the RC site every hour. Now let us move on.

I don't know that we have ever had a coach with the standards and character that Doug Martin had. He is a genuinely good human being, and I would have been proud to have a son of mine play for him, knowing he was in good hands.

Now the program needs to take the next step and build on the good things Doug Martin did and become a winner. This next hire is absolutely crucial.

(I'm hoping Nick S. is going to help here.)

Thank you Coach Martin, for your efforts you deserved better results. I hate to see the program have to start over again with a new coaching staff. I think there is a lot that can be learned from Martin's work by the KSU administration and the more reflective fans of the program. Martin tried to build the program the right way and his tenure cannot simply be dismissed by saying that he was just another in the long line of under achieving coaches. I hope Joel Neilsen is a lucky guy because he is going to need it with his next pick.

JN will not need to be very lucky. He will need to be a little lucky and have a truck load of knowledge, and many good contacts. Hate to say it, but on the field, there is a very good chance that we will be better next year. Maybe, I am just an optimist. No, what I am saying is, we have to be better coached next year.

RE: It’s Over
I think the Doug Martin administration can be summed up by these points:

- Lack of breaks
- Debilitating injuries to superstars
- Undisciplined play
- Failure to close

Some are from the school of thought you make your own breaks but this team just never, EVER catches one. From replay decisions to the way the ball bounces we are just never on the right side of it. We can't get through a season without decimating injuries to absolutely key players - including quarterback where we haven't had our starter playing healthy in November. I also feel as if we must lead the nation in 15+ yard penalties. The penalties this team gets - a personal foul out of bounds after stopping the opponent on 3rd and 18 for example - are tiresome, immature and inexcusable. And of course the failure to close the deal on teams and seasons. Would have had a bowl game in 2006 had they closed the deal at Ball State, would have beat Akron here in 2008 and of course the Bowling Green debacle a year ago.

Those four areas must be addressed in order for this program to think about ANYTHING ELSE than where it is right now.

Sadly, this is a great summary of our last seven years. One thing no one can take away from Coach Martin is his commitment to turning around the KSU program. For mind boggling reasons, his players couldn’t reflect that commitment on the field. Breaks are out of anyone’s control; the mental lapses should be cleaned up.

RE: It’s Over
It has been said that there are 2 attributes of a good leader. First, he must know where he is going. Secondly, he must be able to convince others to go with him. Maybe Martin was good at number one, although I could not see it. He certainly was short on number 2.

RE: It’s Over
This is very bittersweet. While my head knows that this was probably going to have to happen, my heart is still heavy. On paper Coach Martin should have had better results and I wish him and his family the very best. AND I hope our new AD has been paying attention to the fiasco that is happening 15 miles west of us and has learned a few things from that catastrophe. Go Flashes!
