I did this to the Zips fans, Kentville. Fair is fair. Go to the websites to which you refer. Post supporting statements here.
You may hate Martin, but his first recruiting class was rated pretty decent, even by vandelay, who cuts us little slack.
<a href='http://www.macreportonline.com/2005_football_recruiting_analysi.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.macreportonline.com/2005_footba...ing_analysi.htm</a>
<a href='http://www.vandelaysports.com/football/recruit/default.html' target='_blank'>http://www.vandelaysports.com/football/rec...it/default.html</a>
Aside from the fact that recruiting rankings mean just about squat two years into a player's career, I'm just tired of not challenging these statements.
Plus, Kent State has made it clear it's not dropping football, despite the fact that the team does not seem to have received the bulletin. So your question is pointless.

FlashFan, Reno79, et al: You'll be delighted to know that I shall say nothing more about KSU football. I feel that decades of mostly dismal results speak for themselves. If the program does get turned around by Doug Martin or anyone else, I shall salute those who kept the faith.
I'm really here to talk KSU basketball and I hope there will be some lively discussion as the season progresses.
Absolute final football parting shot: Attendance: 3,554

Kentville,
Welcome. It's nice to have a new voice here. If it's lively discussion about basketball you want, strap on your seat belt.
Since you're new here, you may not know we've beat this dead horse of a question about football ad nauseam, which is why you've received the :snore: :snore:
Plus, those making the decision on behalf of KSU have no intention of dropping football. So, as my grandfather used to say, we don't have a nickel and a dime in this discussion.

"Pieces in place" means:
I have a contract and will not be fired by this AD.
I will continue the same way
I wear a white belt and white shoes in my tv commercial selling used cars.
I know that all of you believes me.
We have some great recruits coming in next year.
Add your own

I'll add one:
Quote: GF68 on October 20: I'll admit that I went a little cold on Martin after being hot for him when he was first appointed. I just heard him and I do like him. He has a conviction and determination that is admirable. He sounds like he really likes Kent State. He has faith in his players. He sounds like he knows how to coach. We have to cut him some slack. Go Coach!!

The new prez needs to make football a priority. Currently, the football program seems to be the only thing not going great at KSU, and the stigma seems to overcloud a lot of the huge strides the U has made under CC. Martin gets one more year, and if he dosn't work out KSU needs to go after a Solich type if available. OU has only been slightly less bad than KSU historically, and look what a good, high profile coaching change can do to a program. A renovation to Dix would also make a great showpiece in five years for the ceintenial celebrations. A new Dix against a decent OOC team for homecoming 2010 if they only thing I can think of that can get alumni interested in the program if we don't somehow win the MAC a few times by the end of the decade.

Kentville Wrote:Appreciate your comments, BSU-CARD. You're not some zzz jerk.
If anything, Kent needs another GLEN MASON type coach, a young, fiery, ambitious guy who wants to win NOW and move on. At least with such a coach you're pretty much guaranteed a couple of years of exciting football. The notion (which Kent unfortunately embraces) that a program must be built slowly is just rubbish. It's been demonstrated time and time again that one good recruiting class can turn a program around.
A couple of years ago there was a wide receiver at Canton McKinley to whom Kent offered a scholarship. The kid's stepfather publicly stated that he would send his kid to TRADE SCHOOL before he'd send him to Kent. That's the typical attitude about Kent football in the "high school hotbed".
Worked for us.
Some of you remember just how bad BG's football teams had become at the end of the Blackney era. Urban Meyer changed that immediately and won out of the gate. It can be done.

As I watch a bunch of no name baseball players expected to finish somewhere in oblivion up 3-0 in the World Series, I'm convinced anything can happen.

Should Kent drop football, build a new basketball facility, and jump to a better conference?
If you insist that Kent keep football, you tell me what can be done to turn this program around. Just why is it that Akron (for instance) manages to recruit better players than Kent year after year? Akron has nothing better to offer than Kent in terms of facilities, and Kent has a much nicer campus. What's the deal?
Just don't tell me that Doug Martin is going to build a winner here. There is NO indication that he can recruit the talent anymore than the laughably overrated Dean Pees could.
Great supportive Fans!
Go Rockets!!!

Yeah, I mentioned the Cordelli disaster earlier. Simply a horrible choice. And, you may recall, it was apparrently made because of Lou Holtz's lobbying. Why the listened to Holtz, I'll never know. As far as I am aware he never had any real connection to Kent State whatsover, other than the fact he went to Kent State. Pinkel should have been selected, or was that the opening when Nick Saban was available? I don't remember for certain. All I know is that it was reported that Cordelli was fired because large numbers of his players threatened to quit if he stayed.

The answer is fairly simple, but most of us don't want to go there. Become Marshall. Recruit prop 48 players. Have unscrupulous boosters and alumni pay recruits. Relax academic standards. You can become competitive quickly when you "recruit" the right kind of athlete. Note I said athlete, not student. Be careful what you wish for.
Trust me, I have wondered if I would take 10 years of probabtion for a bowl game. No one seems to notice when schools cheat and win, but they notice crappy attendance and .300 all time winning %. What it comes down to for me is integrity and I don't want Kent to be like Marshall. Look where it got them now. I am not sure if they could beat us this year.
The other answer is not easy and I am really tired of thinking about it. There are people with full time jobs who are supposed to be thinking about this and they haven't figured it out yet...

Thanks for the info FlashFan. I wasn't aware of the scholarship. Still, at the time, the selection of Cordelli didn't seem a very wise one. And, clearly, he didn't get the job done, to say the least.
