Now the rubber hits the road and the cheese gets more binding! Nothing but MAC teams and a MAC-like team in Army, with Martin's job on the line. Stay tuned.

Ain't that the truth. It is make or break time for Doug.

Same as what I was thinking. I saw this as a highly defensive game, just with 2 different calibor teams. Cc this game, but with a MAC team instead of Penn State, and we win.
The missed opportunities are still a back breaker though.

RE: Penn State Game
Ok just got home from the game and I am completely disgusted with the whole game, with the only bright spot being the defense. So heres my total assesment. I apologize now for all spelling and grammar issues Im beyond tired but wanted to get this out before I forget stuff.

Ill start with my fan experience... I was actually disappointed in the staduim atmosphere. With easily over 95k in attendence not sure actual numbers it sounded much like Dix staduim for the most part. There were times when it got loud but for the most part the crowd was irrelavent. The PSU fans around me werent bad at all with a few asking questions about the university. Alot of them seemed to be at the game just to be at the game with no true interest in the game just in the chants. I was impressed with the cohesivness of the students. I dont know how they were doing it but it all seemed scripted and planned out. The most impressive being their version of "the wave" starting it off as a normal wave then with it coming back around doing it in slow motion.

I was disappointed in the way Martin handles his sidelines. With Keith struggling he only took him aside maybe 3 times all game and each time for a brief 30 seconds or so. He was never around any of the sideline huddles and seemed to distance himself as much as he could from them. I only saw him try to "motivate" the team one time and that involved him clapping his clipboard telling them to cmon. I also dont like that no one was going over the drives with Keith to show him what went wrong. No one was keeping him warmed up by playing catch with him he just kinda stood off on his own or next to Morgan. The coaching staff all together only got fired up twice, once with Martin getting mad on a missed holding call and the other was with like 45 seconds left a coach yelling at someone to tackle harder while the offense was on the field. That one made no sense to me and his choice of words were "You need to F******* tackle harder" which was loud enough for the section I was in to hear plain as day.

The offense was pitiful from the get go. Every play that seemed to work they didnt try to use again. The lack of going for it on 4th and short was annoying. Even the PSU fans couldnt understand it. Im all about playing to win not playing to keep it close. No one will care if we lose by 1 or lose by 79 but people will take notice if you win. I dont know if Keith was making audiles at the line or not but he seemed to be in a different playbook then his recievers on multiple occasions. Sadly when he did get it to them they had difficulties bringing it in.

The defense was nothing short of amazing. To be out on the field as much as they were and how inept the offense was they did a great job. Frustration didnt seem to set in until the last scoring drive by PSU. Wolfe's interception was a great effort on his part to read the play so good. There was alot of holding going on that wasnt called if they call the game right the defense holds PSU to under 40% on 3rd downs. The hustle and gang tackles were nice to see and I dont know if you could see it on tv but Hartman was keeping the defense fired up starting right after he missed getting the fumble.

A few other side notes. I got asked where KSU was located so I kindly explained, just to have the guy tell me his wife graduated from Oberlin and didnt know where Kent was. I thought that was pretty embarressing for both the university and her for not knowing where the 3rd largest university in Ohio is located. Then after the game we went to a place called the diner and got completely ignored and stared at like we were diseased. We sat there for a good 15 minutes with out as much as a hello from the waiting staff. With our seats being right next to the kitchen where they all walked past. Didnt even get to order drinks in that time. Then we left that place highly upset and started walking to another place just to be told by some random guy that Kent has the worst campus and we suck. Also during the pregame we got lectured for not standing during the PSU alma mater and I responded that the song means nothing to me and that they wouldnt stand during ours so it doesnt matter. Did anyone else have problems like this?

RE: Penn State Game
No need to apologize for spelling and grammar.

Well, I'm glad the defense looked good, but I'm not really sure how good PSU's offense is at this point in the season. Still, it is likely that it is at least as good as what Kent State will see the rest of the season. Defense will win more games than the offense will, but here's hoping that the Flashes start moving the ball better and scoring more against the MAC defenses, none of whom are likely to be as good as BC's or PSU's. I expected Kent State to have an easy time of it with Murray State, and to lose to BC and Penn State. Starting in two weeks we'll see just how good Kent State really is against FBS teams more like themselves than any of the first three opponents. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I think the defense can win games for us in the MAC.

That 3rd & 5 play sure liked interference to me. I was very surprised it wasn't called & that the TV announcers didn't mention it.

I agree that KSU's D is solid. I don't see many opposing MAC teams effectively running the ball. If the O could have produced at least a little (keeping the D off the field all day) that game was probably a 17-10 loss or maybe even closer. The D certainly played well enough to win.

RE: Penn State Game
I do think our QB needs to play better but I also think it is too early to say our team is terrible. If we play well in the MAC I will think say the season is a success for us. If we get a winning season I consider that a success at this time. Going to a bowl game would be huge, winning one even better. All of this is still easily within our reach as we have not lost a game we were expected to win. The MAC and the game against Army are the only games that we should really nit-pick.
